Introducing Couplan!

Standard

Lately I’ve been thinking about a lot of sad and important things. Today I’ve had a lovely morning full of tea and reading, so I’m going to write about my awesome cat, Couplan! Might as well introduce her more formally since there are pictures of her all over my blog.

She’s permanently sleepy

This beautiful lady has been putting up with my shit for 12 years now. And she still loves me!

I met Couplan when I was still in high school and she was living at the SPCA. She was shy at first, but the way she would stretch her back and stand on tip-toes when I petted her made me laugh, so I took her home. She still does the tip-toes thing, and her tale vibrates, when she’s getting excited for wet food.

Couplan is named after Douglas Coupland, my favourite author when I was a teenager. We’ve had our ups and downs. For the first year or so that we lived together, I thought she hated me because she would do kittenish things I wasn’t used to, like bite and scratch me. She mellowed out within a couple of years, though, and now she mostly wants to cuddle me and purr. She’s a fan of spooning. I’ve always felt a little guilty for the brief time after high school when I moved into my first place and she stayed with my parents. She forgave me, but I have learned that I could never live in a place that doesn’t allow cats again.

Couplan has been fairly accommodating to some cat friends that we’ve fostered over the years, but Elliott was her first partner-in-crime, and best friend for 6 years. Since Elliott died a few years ago, Couplan has had nightmares regularly, which were never a problem before. We all miss Elliott a lot. I think Couplan is happier since Fyodor came to live with us last year, but she doesn’t like to show her affection for him. They fight a lot, but we’ll come home to see them jump out of their cuddle pile (it’s a secret love!)

BFFs
Couplan and Elliott

Couplan likes only the highest quality catnip which never fails to give her squinty, stoner eyes. She loves sunspots, but only likes the outside sometimes. Her favourite thing is quiet family cuddle time. She is the most accepting, trustworthy friend.

Fyodor will  get his own introduction soon!
